An Overwhelming Joy

Let me just start by saying that joy is not happiness. Its not something that comes and goes based on your circumstances. It’s not an emotion that can’t be controlled. Joy is far greater than any emotion that we as humans feel because it’s not human. And what I mean by that is that joy is from the Lord, it’s bigger than us and this world that is why it's not boxed in by circumstances. Our emotions are circumstantial, and I know that that is not always something that we like hearing because there are emotions that are so strong that they feel they are above our circumstances, they feel more powerful than us.

The truth is that we are stronger than our emotions, if we don’t want to feel something we do have the ability to change them, that is not always easy, its not always fun, but it's possible. But joy is something that we can have that does not change due to what we are feeling. Joy, pure joy is uncontrollable, it overflows into every area of our lives.

Psalm 4:7-8 says

You have put more joy in my heart

than they have when their grain and wine abound.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep;

for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

God gives joy not because we are living lives that are filled with amazing things, He does not give us joy because all of our needs are met or we have an abundance of things. God gives us joy almost despite what we have or don’t have. Joy also does not come by its self, God also gives us peace. Often joy comes in the darkest of times when we feel like we are just failing at life.

But God gives us peace in that joy because He knows that our circumstances don’t always change right away but we need that peace in order to withstand all that is to come. There are times when it feels like our worlds are falling apart and everyday feels like we have less and less control. But let me tell you that no matter what control you feel or think you have the truth is that you have no control over anything.

But let me tell you that there is freedom in your lack of control, there is peace, there is joy waiting for you in the moment that you open your eyes and see that you have no control but the one that does loves you more then you could ever know and in that is pure joy.
